Lost a Filling? What to Do Before You Can See the Dentist

A lost filling isn't usually a true emergency, but it should be repaired within a few days to prevent decay, sensitivity, and infection. Rinse with warm salt water, avoid chewing on that side, and use over-the-counter temporary dental cement, never super glue. Call La Mirada One Dental at (562) 777-1234 for a same-day or next-day appointment.

It almost always happens at the worst time. A bite of granola at breakfast. A piece of toffee on a Saturday night. You feel something hard between your teeth, fish it out, and realize it isn't food. It's your filling. At La Mirada One Dental, we get this call from families across La Mirada, Cerritos, and Norwalk every single week. The good news? You have time. Just not unlimited time.

Is a lost filling a dental emergency?

For most patients, no. A lost filling is urgent but not a true emergency unless you also have severe pain, ongoing bleeding, swelling, or a visibly fractured tooth. In those cases, call us right away.

Here's why we still want to see you within a few days. Once the filling pops out, the dentin underneath is exposed. That layer is far softer than enamel and reacts quickly to hot coffee, ice water, and anything sweet. Food can also pack into the hollow space, and according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, untreated cavities can progress to pulp infection, sometimes requiring a root canal or extraction. A small repair today is much simpler than a crown next month.

Call us at (562) 777-1234. Same-day or next-day repair is usually possible, and our Saturday hours help working families and Biola University students who can't slip out during the week.

What should I do in the first hour?

Stay calm and take four simple steps:

  • Rinse gently with warm salt water. The American Dental Association notes that warm salt rinses help reduce bacteria and soothe irritated oral tissue. Half a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water is plenty.

  • Save the filling if you can find it. Pop it in a small container or plastic bag and bring it to your appointment. Sometimes it helps us match shade or confirm what was in the tooth.

  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen or acetaminophen if you have discomfort. Follow the label.

  • Avoid chewing on that side. Treat the tooth like it has a tiny open window. Don't load it up.

That's the whole first hour. Breathe.

How can I protect the tooth until my appointment?

If you can't get in today, a little protection goes a long way.

Most pharmacies on Imperial Highway carry over-the-counter temporary dental cement in the oral care aisle. It's inexpensive, easy to apply, and designed exactly for this. In a pinch, a small wad of sugar-free gum can plug the hole for a few hours, though it's a short-term fix only. Keep brushing gently around the area. A clean tooth is a happy tooth.

Skip very hot drinks, ice water, hard pretzels, and anything sticky like caramel or taffy. We had a patient from Whittier last fall who lost a filling on a Friday and made it through the weekend on soup, scrambled eggs, and lukewarm tea. He was in our chair Saturday morning. Easy fix.

What NOT to do when a filling falls out

This list matters as much as the first one.

  • Do not use super glue or any household adhesive. They contain toxic chemicals not meant for the mouth and they damage tooth structure.

  • Do not place aspirin directly on the gum. The ADA warns this causes a chemical burn rather than relieving pain. Swallow pain relievers as directed instead.

  • Do not ignore it for weeks. Teeth don't regrow enamel. The hole only gets bigger.

  • Do not chew ice, hard candy, or popcorn kernels on that side. The remaining tooth wall is thinner than you think.

Simple rules. Big difference.

Why do fillings fall out in the first place?

Fillings are durable, but nothing in the mouth lasts forever. The American Dental Association notes that composite fillings typically last 5 to 7 years, with many lasting longer depending on size, location, and oral habits, and amalgam (silver) fillings often last 10 to 15 years or more.

Common reasons we see in our office:

  • Normal wear over a decade or more of chewing

  • New decay forming around the edges of the old filling

  • Grinding or clenching at night, which research published in the Journal of the American Dental Association links to restoration failure

  • Biting something unexpectedly hard, like a popcorn kernel or olive pit

If a filling from another office failed quickly, that's worth a conversation. Sometimes it's the bite. Sometimes it's the original prep. We'll look at the whole picture.

What will happen at your repair appointment?

Your visit starts with a quick exam and a digital X-ray to check for hidden decay or cracks under the old filling site. If the tooth is healthy and the cavity is small to medium, Dr. Park can usually place a new filling the same visit. You're in and out in under an hour.

If decay has reached deeper structures or the tooth wall is too thin to hold a filling, we'll talk honestly about a crown or, less commonly, a root canal. No surprises, no pressure. We'll show you the X-ray and explain your options.

If you're uninsured, ask about our in-house membership plan. It's a flat annual fee that covers exams, cleanings, X-rays, and gives you a meaningful discount on treatment like fillings and crowns. Many self-employed families from Cerritos and La Habra tell us it saves more than their old PPO did.

A small repair today is much simpler than a crown next month, and far simpler than a root canal six months from now.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can I wait to fix a lost filling?

A few days is generally fine if you have no pain and you're protecting the tooth. Beyond a week or two, the risk of new decay, sensitivity, and infection climbs sharply. Call us within 24 to 48 hours so we can get you on the schedule.

Can I eat normally with a missing filling?

Eat on the other side. Stick to softer foods at moderate temperatures. Avoid sticky candies, hard nuts, popcorn, and ice. Most patients adjust easily for a day or two until their repair appointment.

Will I need a crown if my filling fell out?

Not always. If the remaining tooth structure is strong and the cavity is small to medium, a new filling usually works. A crown is recommended when the tooth wall is too thin or the cavity is too large for a filling to hold reliably. We'll show you the X-ray and explain why.

Does insurance cover replacing a lost filling?

Most PPO plans cover filling replacement, usually with a frequency limit (often every 2 years per tooth). We accept most major PPOs and will verify your benefits before treatment. If you're uninsured, our in-house membership plan or CareCredit financing can help.

Can a filling fall out without me feeling it?

Yes, especially with small fillings or back molars. Many patients first notice it while flossing or feeling a rough edge with their tongue. If you spot a change but feel no pain, still book an appointment. Catching it early keeps the repair simple.
