Is a chipped tooth a dental emergency? When to call right away
A chipped tooth is a dental emergency if it bleeds heavily, exposes the pink inner pulp, causes severe pain, or makes the tooth feel loose. Small enamel chips without pain can usually wait a day or two. When in doubt, call La Mirada One Dental at (562) 777-1234. Same-day emergency appointments are available.

At La Mirada One Dental, we get this call almost every week. A dad in La Mirada watches his daughter take a soccer ball to the mouth at Behringer Park. A Cerritos grandma bites into a hard piece of bread and feels something snap. The first question is always the same: does this need to be fixed tonight?
Most of the time, the answer depends on what you see when you look in the mirror. Let us walk you through it.
What actually counts as a chipped tooth emergency?
Not every chip is urgent. We sort them into three tiers so families can decide in about 60 seconds.
Tier 1: Minor enamel chip. A small piece of the outer tooth has flaked off. No pain, no sensitivity, no bleeding. The tooth still feels solid. This can usually wait until the next business day. According to the ADA, dental injuries like these are among the most common oral injuries treated by dentists, and most are repaired in a single visit.
Tier 2: Dentin chip with sensitivity. The chip is deeper. You feel a zing with cold water or air. The edge looks yellower than the rest of the tooth, because the dentin layer is now exposed. Book a same-day or next-day appointment. Waiting too long can let bacteria reach the nerve.
Tier 3: Deep chip exposing the pulp. You see pink or red tissue in the center of the break. There is throbbing pain, ongoing bleeding, or the tooth feels loose. Call now. The American Association of Endodontists notes that fractures exposing the pulp need urgent care to prevent infection and often require a root canal.
Red flags that always mean call right away:
Bleeding that does not slow after 10 minutes of gentle pressure
Visible pink or red tissue inside the tooth
Severe or throbbing pain
The tooth wiggles or feels out of place
Swelling in the cheek or gum near the tooth
What should I do in the first hour after chipping a tooth?
The first hour matters. Here is the short list we give patients on the phone.
Rinse with warm water. Clear away any debris or blood so you can see the damage.
Stop the bleeding. Fold a piece of clean gauze or a damp tea bag over the area and bite gently for 10 minutes.
Save the fragment. If you can find the piece of tooth, drop it in a small container of milk or hold it in your cheek. The American Association of Endodontists recommends milk or saliva because they help preserve the tissue for possible reattachment.
Cold compress on the cheek. Ten minutes on, ten minutes off. This calms swelling on the ride to the office.
Skip hot, cold, sticky, and crunchy foods. Chew on the other side until you are seen.
Cover sharp edges. If a jagged edge is cutting your tongue, a small piece of sugar-free gum or dental wax pressed over it works until your appointment.
Do not scrub the tooth fragment. Do not let it dry out. Bring it with you.
How do dentists fix a chipped tooth?
The repair depends on which tier you fall into. In our La Mirada office, most chips are handled in one visit.
Smoothing and polishing. For tiny enamel chips, we round and polish the edge. Quick. Painless. Often no numbing needed.
Composite bonding. For small to medium chips, we shape tooth-colored composite resin onto the tooth and cure it with a light. The ADA describes bonding as a common single-visit treatment for chipped teeth, and it usually takes 30 to 60 minutes per tooth.
Porcelain veneer or crown. Larger fractures, especially on front teeth or back chewing surfaces, often need a veneer or crown for strength and appearance. We use digital scans to plan these so the bite feels natural.
Root canal plus crown. When the pulp is exposed, a root canal removes the infected tissue, then a crown protects what is left of the tooth. It saves the natural tooth and stops the pain.
Same day. One visit when possible. That is the goal.
How can La Mirada families prevent chipped teeth?
Most chipped teeth we see come from three sources: sports, grinding, and bad luck with hard food. The first two are very preventable.
Custom mouthguards for sports. Whether your kid plays football at La Mirada High or you do intramural basketball at Biola University, a mouthguard is the single best investment. The ADA Council on Scientific Affairs has long supported mouthguards as effective in reducing sports-related dental injuries.
Nightguards for grinders. If you wake up with a sore jaw or your partner hears grinding, a custom nightguard protects enamel from years of pressure.
Skip the ice and popcorn kernels. Two of the top culprits we see in adult patients. Hard candy is a close third.
Fix small cavities early. A weakened tooth chips far more easily than a healthy one.
When should I call La Mirada One Dental?
Call us as soon as you can during business hours. We hold same-day emergency slots Tuesday through Saturday at our office on Imperial Highway, near Walmart Neighborhood Market and CVS. Our Saturday morning hours make us one of the few options in the area for weekend injuries from Cerritos, Norwalk, Whittier, and Buena Park.
When you call (562) 777-1234, tell the front desk:
Which tooth is chipped (front, back, top, bottom)
Whether you see pink or red tissue in the break
Pain level from 1 to 10
Whether you saved the fragment
That gives us what we need to get you in fast. We also offer a free emergency dental exam, so you will know what the repair involves and what it costs before any treatment starts.
If it is the middle of the night and the pain is severe, take ibuprofen as directed, use a cold compress, and call us first thing in the morning. Hospital ERs can help with pain medication and rule out a jaw fracture, but they typically cannot perform definitive dental repair and will refer you back to a dentist anyway.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a chipped tooth heal on its own?
No. Unlike bone, tooth enamel does not regrow. A small chip will not get worse on its own if it is just cosmetic, but it will not repair itself either. Even tiny chips often need smoothing so the rough edge does not irritate your tongue or trap bacteria.
Will a small chip get worse if I leave it?
It can. A chip creates a weak spot, and chewing pressure tends to extend the crack over time. Small chips are also harder to clean, which raises decay risk. Most patients are happier fixing a small chip with quick bonding than waiting until it needs a crown.
How much does it cost to fix a chipped tooth?
It depends on the repair. Smoothing is the least expensive, composite bonding is mid-range, and crowns or veneers cost more. Most PPO insurance plans cover bonding and crowns at a percentage. Our in-house membership plan also includes meaningful discounts. We will give you a clear estimate before any work begins.
Should I go to the ER for a broken tooth?
Only if you have uncontrolled bleeding, signs of a jaw fracture, or facial swelling that affects breathing or swallowing. For the tooth itself, a dentist is the right call. ERs can manage pain but generally cannot rebuild a tooth.
Is chipping a baby tooth an emergency for my child?
Often less urgent than an adult tooth, but still worth a same-day call if there is bleeding, pain, or a deep break. We want to make sure the underlying permanent tooth has not been affected. A quick exam and an X-ray usually settle the question.
If you or someone in your family just chipped a tooth, give us a call. La Mirada One Dental is at 14930 E Imperial Hwy, Suite D, La Mirada. Phone (562) 777-1234. We will help you figure out whether to come in today, tomorrow, or just relax until your next cleaning.
